Lucas Oil MLRA Season Opener Falls To Mother Nature

Thursday, April 11, 2019

Wheatland, Missouri (April 11, 2019) - Lucas Oil MLRA fans and drivers will have to wait one more week to get their first real taste of MLRA late model racing in 2019. After much discussion, series and track officials have made the difficult decision to cancel this upcoming weekends 6th Annual Spring Nationals Presented by RacingJunk.com at the Lucas Oil Speedway.

Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Danny Lorton said that he, MLRA Director Ernie Leftwich and Lucas Oil Director of Racing Operations Dan Robinson agreed that cancelling is the correct decision. A practice session for the MLRA drivers had been scheduled for Thursday night.

Lorton said of the decision, "We wanted to make the decision early enough so the teams and fans planning to make long hauls would know before starting their trips. Saturday looks like unseasonably cool temperatures and a near-100-percent chance of rain throughout the afternoon and evening."

This will mark the second year in a row that the event has been claimed by mother nature after the threat of severe weather and frigged temperatures forced the postponement in 2018.

The MLRA season opener will now head east to the Davenport Speedway in Davenport, Iowa next Friday night April 19th. Drivers will take to the super-fast, ½-mile speedway in pursuit of the $5,000 winner's check, which was claimed one year ago by Chris Simpson. Located on the grounds of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, this will mark the first of two series visits this season, the second coming up on May 3rd when drivers will battle on the ¼ mile short track.

Rounding out next weekend on Saturday evening April 20th, action will heat-up and the pay will double-up, as the MLRA returns to 34 Raceway for the 11th Annual Slocum 50. This growing event is quickly becoming a must see for die-hard late model fans with its $10,555 top prize attracting many of the Midwest top drivers. One year ago it was Shannon Babb grabbing top honors in front of a packed house and strong field of over 40 cars.
